Exposhipping Expomaritt Istanbul 2017: Global Maritime Industry Meeting

‘14th Exposhipping Expomaritt Istanbul Marine Industry Technology and Trade Exhibition’, one of the most important events of global marine industry, was held on March 21-24, 2017, at Pendik Green Park Convention Center in Turkish capital. The event which was organized for the 14th time by UBM, with the support of İMEAK Turkish Chamber of Shipping and Turkish Maritime Education Foundation (TÜDEV) brought together national and international players of maritime industry and increased new opportunities for international cooperation.


Exposhipping Expomaritt Istanbul set up on 11,000 square meter which will became the largest fairground area in Turkey of all times. Exhibition was a meeting point for Turkish and international important companies from shipping line operations, ship management, ship brokerage, ship freighting, ship trade, shipyard management, ship building and maintenance, container transportation, logistics, ship building subsidiary industries and banking, finance, insurance and educational organizations related to industry with leading brands. The participants presented their products and services with latest technologies.

In 2015, over 200 exhibitor companies and, 627 brands from 43 countries participated in the 13th Exposhipping EXPOMARITT Istanbul. Over 7,000 maritime industry professionals from 57 countries participated in the exhibition. This time, the 14th Exposhipping EXPOMARITT Istanbul forming the basis for new business partnerships and enabling latest developments at the marine trade services industry to over 200 exhibitors representing more than 600 brands from more than 40 countries hosted nearly 10,000 maritime professionals from over 50 countries.

 Day 1st. Opening

Exposhipping 2017 has started with the visiting the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport and Communication stand. Then executive chairman of UBM EMEA Turkey Serkan Tığlıoğlu, executive chairman of Turkish Chamber of Shipping Metin Kalkavan, the Deputy Secretary from The Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ahmet Selçuk Sert made their keynote speeches for the official opening.

The key elements of the first day of the exhibition was the JOTUN Conference (Topic: ISO 19030 Measurement of changes in hull and propeller performance) and Ilkfer Group Conference: presentation of IVISWA LAB. & VEEMS Marine Automation System, UNI Software, was held during this event.

Day 2nd. Seatrade Global Maritime Summit

The opening session of the Seatrade Global Maritime Summit, being the key event of the second exhibition day, was devoted to the topic “The state of the maritime sector against the backdrop of the wold economy: Global trends & Turkish perspective.” Keynote speeches was made by the Head of Turkish Chamber of Shipping Metin Kalkavan and the Secretary General of the Panama Maritime Authority Tomas Avila.

The GISBIR president Murat Kiran pointed out that Turkish shipyards were “modern, technology advanced and internationally certified,” offering a wide range of commercial and military vessel types. Due to the current shortage of commercial newbuilding orders globally, maintenance and repair activities and naval work formed the mainstay of their activities, he added.

On a panel discussion within the frameworks of Shipowmers’ Forum the participants exchanged views on topical issues affecting their businesses and shipping as a whole: 1.) Low freight rates, consolidation within the indudsrty, continuing commercial pressures in current post-Hanjin times (how do shipowners deal with the prolonged downturn?), 2.) Where will new opportunities come from? Is it a good time to invest? 3.) Eco-friendly ships: efficiencies, economies and rewards to shipowners.

“There is hope definitely. We have to behave smart to change our industry’s destiny. The important thing is diversify!”, Dr. Şadan Kaptanoğlu, owner, Kaptanoğlu Shipping, stressed.

Other discussions that day were devoted to shipbuilding, shiprepair & retrofits, air emissions environmental regulation, and also financing the maritime sector.

Day 3. Seatrade Global Maritime Forum continuing

The main topics on panel discussions during the next conference day were “Ship of the future”, “Human elements”, “Ship recucling”, “Maritime services” and “Ports & Infrastructure”. On the last one Admiral Cem Gürdeniz, Founding Director, Koç University Maritime Forum, commented that the mankind’s dependence on the sea transportation has almost tripled in the last 40 years. In 2016, almost 11 billion tons of goods with the commercial value of 17 tn dollars were carried over the oceans. of which 5 tn usd passed the waters of South China Sea alone.



In a whole, more than 30 international and Turkish speakers took part in a two-day Global Maritime Summit conference programmed by Seatrade that runned in parallel with the exhibition. Among the honored guests visited the event were Cemalettin Şevli, The President of Marine Trade, Ministry of Transport, Maritime Afairs and Communications, Dr. Kenan Şahin, The Mayor of Pendik Municipality, and many other well known persons.


More than 30 media partnets supported Exposhipping EXPOMARITT Istanbul 2017, and International Sea magazine “Shipping” was among them.
