The 2nd International Green Shipping Summit was concluded on October 17th in Rotterdam after two productive days of panels and speeches by prominent representatives of shipowners, shipbuilding companies, shipyards, ports, associations and governmental bodies.
It is important that the entire value chain work together to arrive at solutions benefiting the climate and the whole industry. This was highlighted on the first day of the Summit in the keynote address by Climeon’s Christopher Engman who covered the challenges and opportunities encountered in the process of going from brown to green in shipping, concentrating on fuel alternatives, scrubbers, waste heat recovery, batteries and fuel cells. The theme was expanded upon by Dietmar Zutt from MAN Diesel & Turbo who provided solutions for ecology and economy in ship propulsion and Per Tunell from Wallenius Marine who talked about the way towards sustainable shipping with zero emissions, emphasising the need for further collaboration in the entire supply chain. Other issues faced by the Maritime industry when implementing green shipping initiatives were also discussed.
Day one of the 2nd International Green Shipping Summit culminated with the Awards Ceremon y which recognised the best green practices across the global industry. This year the winners were STX Franc e for the most innovative shipbuilding solution, BIMCO for the most extraordinary contribution to HSSE, Climeon for the most exceptional contribution to green shipping, ENGIE for the greenest project design of the year, the greenest port of the year – Port of Rotterdam , the greenest shipowner of the year – Carnival Corporation and the greenest marine service provider of the year MAN Diesel & Turbo .
During the second day, a number of speakers focused on the synergy of environmental protection and higher performance in shipping. For example, Marcus Ejdersten presented the MacGregor approach to smarter cargo handling which results in more sustainable and energy efficient processes. The balance between the environmental and performance requirements was also accentuated by Peter Vickers of Vickers Oil who gave a presentation about Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs). The Summit ended with a productive discussion on the role of port
authorities regarding green initiatives with a call for ports partnerships to reach sustainability by working together.
