Ports of Stockholm started construction of a new port for containers and rolling goods

To facilitate the sustainable and efficient supply of goods to one of Europe’s most rapidly growing capital cities – that is the goal of the construction of Stockholm Norvik Port that was begun by Ports of Stockholm in September.

New port is situated at Norvik, close to Nynäshamn, near Sweden capital. As the press service of Ports of Stockholm reported, NCC company will construct the Norvik Logistics and Business Park adjacent to the port, where companies will be able to establish their operations in a dynamic environment, in close proximity to the port, road network, railways and capital city.

«Stockholm is growing rapidly. This is an important investment in creating an efficient supply of goods and in achieving sustainable urban development and growth in the region», says Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm.

Johan Castwall, Ports of Stockholm Managing Director agreed that freight volumes are constantly increasing so the Stockholm Norvik Port «is an important piece of the jigsaw in developing our ports to be able to handle the volumes and vessel sizes of the future».

«Stockholm and the Baltic Sea area are both strategically very important and we are delighted to be building on our existing relationship with Ports of Stockholm through this new project. The Stockholm Norvik Port will deliver economic and environmental benefits for trade serving the Stockholm region», says Clemence Cheng, Managing Director of Hutchison Port Holdings Europe. HPHcollaborates with Ports of Stockholm on container handling in the ports at Stockholm and Nynäshamn (in particular, company operates the Container Terminal Frihamnen).

Today nine out of ten consumer goods arrive in Sweden by sea from other countries. Cargo transferring from Sweden congested roads and railways to be transported instead by ship all the way to the heart of Sweden’s largest consumer area means that the supply of goods to the region will be more sustainable.

The Ports of Stockholm Group comprises the parent company Stockholms Hamn AB and the subsidiaries Nynäshamns Hamn AB, Nynäshamns Mark AB and Kapellskärs Hamn AB.

Stockholms Hamn AB is fully owned by the City of Stockholm.

Nynäshamns Hamn AB is a wholly owned subsidiary. Nynäshamns Mark AB is 50 percent owned by Stockholms Hamn AB and 50 percent owned by the Municipality of Nynäshamn.

Kapellskärs Hamn AB is 91 percent owned by Stockholms Hamn AB with the remaining nine percent owned by the Municipality of Norrtälje.

Generally, Stockholm Norvik Port is needed for several reasons. Firstly, Stockholm is growing and the Stockholm Norvik Port will ensure the efficient supply of goods to the region. With this type of growth, long-term investment in a well-functioning infrastructure is essential and the port is an important part of this development.

Secondly, ships are getting bigger. Container ship volumes and the volumes of ships carrying rolling goods are increasing. The shipping companies are consequently building larger vessels, which is both environmentally and economically advantageous. Experts say that the Stockholm Norvik Port will meet the needs of modern ships for deeper draughts, longer quays, larger terminal areas and short and easy approach lanes from the larger fairways.

And finally, a modern port benefits the environment. Stockholm Norvik Port complies with the EU ambition to increase the proportion of sea transport in relation to the total amount of transported goods. A new and modern port with direct motorway and railway connections, built using state-of-the-art technologies, is an efficient and sustainable transport solution.
